Jaisalmer sits on the edge of the Thar Desert, and its weather is shaped by that geography — long, intense summers, a short monsoon, and a cool winter that most travellers consider the sweet spot. Knowing which season you're booking into changes everything from what you pack to what time of day you should plan a safari.
Winter (October to March) — the peak season
This is when most people visit, and for good reason. Daytime temperatures are pleasant for sightseeing and fort walks, while evenings and nights in the desert turn genuinely cold — a desert camp stay in December or January will need warm layers after sunset. This is also the best window for camel and jeep safaris, since midday heat isn't a concern.
Summer (April to June) — hot, and not for everyone
Summer in Jaisalmer is extreme, with daytime temperatures regularly climbing well past 40°C. It's possible to visit — sightseeing in the early morning and evening, with rest indoors during the afternoon — but it's a demanding trip and not what most first-time visitors are picturing. If you do travel in summer, stick to early morning or late afternoon safaris and carry more water than you think you'll need.
Monsoon (July to September) — quiet, and occasionally green
Jaisalmer gets relatively little rain compared to the rest of India, so the monsoon here is mild rather than a washout. Temperatures ease off from the summer peak, tourist numbers drop, and the desert occasionally shows a surprising streak of green after rain. It's a reasonable off-season option if you don't mind occasional humidity and want fewer crowds.
Our take
If your dates are flexible, October to February gives you the most comfortable version of Jaisalmer — for the fort, the havelis, and especially for an overnight desert camp. If you're set on other months, it's still very doable, just plan your outdoor time around the heat rather than against it.
