A haveli is a traditional mansion, and Jaisalmer's wealthiest merchant families competed for generations to build the most impressive ones — carved almost entirely from local sandstone. Three havelis in particular are usually included on any city sightseeing route.
Patwon Ki Haveli
Actually a cluster of five havelis built close together, Patwon Ki Haveli is known for its extraordinarily detailed carved facades and, inside, mirror work and painted walls. It's generally considered the most elaborate haveli complex in the city.
Nathmal Ki Haveli
Local guides often tell the story of two brothers who each carved one half of this haveli's facade at the same time, working independently — which is said to explain the small asymmetries between the two sides if you look closely. Whether or not you take the story literally, it's a striking building with fine carving throughout.
Salim Singh Ki Haveli
Recognisable by its distinctive curved roof, often compared to a peacock in shape, this haveli has a very different silhouette from the other two and is worth seeing for that alone.
All three are within a short walk or drive of the fort, so they're easy to combine with a Jaisalmer Fort visit in a single morning.
