Sam and Khuri are the two most visited dune areas near Jaisalmer, and travellers often ask which one is 'better'. The honest answer is that they suit different priorities.
Sam Sand Dunes
Sam is closer to Jaisalmer city (around 40km) and is the most popular and well-developed dune destination, with the widest choice of desert camps and safari operators. It's busier, especially around sunset, but that popularity comes with convenience — more options, easier logistics, and shorter travel time.
Khuri Sand Dunes
Khuri is a bit further out and considerably quieter, with a more traditional village feel. If you'd rather trade a slightly longer drive for a calmer, less crowded dune experience, Khuri is worth considering — though the range of camps and activity operators is smaller than at Sam.

For most first-time visitors, especially on a shorter trip, Sam is the practical choice — it's closer, well set up, and covers everything most people are looking for in a desert safari. If you've already done Sam on a previous trip and want something quieter, Khuri is a good change of pace.
