The single most common mistake travellers make before a desert safari is packing for daytime heat and forgetting how cold the desert gets after dark, especially between November and February.
For daytime
- Light, breathable, long-sleeved clothing — better sun protection than short sleeves without the heat of heavy fabric.
- A hat or scarf that can cover your head and neck.
- Sunglasses and sunscreen — the glare off the sand is stronger than it looks.
- Closed shoes rather than sandals, especially for jeep safaris.
For evening and overnight camp stays
- A warm jacket or fleece — desert nights in winter can drop close to freezing.
- A change of clothes for the morning, since camp mornings start early and can still be chilly.
- A power bank, since charging points at desert camps can be limited.
- A basic torch or phone flashlight for getting around camp after dark.
Beyond clothing, bring more water than you think you need, and if you're prone to motion sickness, consider that before booking a longer jeep safari session.
